## Zapier Error Alerts to Slack

### Overview
Receive instant Slack notifications whenever any of your Zapier automations encounter an error, including the Zap name, error message, and a direct link to troubleshoot, so your team can respond before the issue affects your operations.

### Prerequisites
- Zapier account (any paid plan, as error handling is limited on Free)
- Slack workspace (any plan)
- A dedicated Slack channel for automation alerts (e.g., #automation-alerts)

### Setup Steps

**Step 1: Create a dedicated Slack channel**
- In Slack, create a new channel called "#automation-alerts"
- Add team members who are responsible for maintaining your automations
- Set the channel purpose: "Automated alerts for Zapier errors and automation issues"

**Step 2: Create a new Zap in Zapier**
Log in to Zapier and click "Create Zap". Name it "Zapier Error Monitor".

**Step 3: Configure the Zapier Manager trigger**
- App: Zapier Manager (built-in Zapier app)
- Trigger event: "Zap Error"
- This monitors ALL your Zaps for errors automatically

**Step 4: Add a Formatter step for the error message**
- App: Formatter by Zapier
- Action: "Text - Truncate"
- Input: Error message from the trigger

**Step 7: Test the integration**
1. Intentionally break one of your test Zaps (e.g., disconnect an account temporarily)
2. Trigger the broken Zap

5. Click the troubleshooting link to verify it takes you to the correct Zap
6. Fix the intentionally broken Zap

### Error Handling
- **This Zap fails:** If the error monitoring Zap itself fails, you will receive an email from Zapier (default behaviour). This is your safety net.
- **Too many alerts:** If a single Zap is generating many errors, fix the root cause rather than muting alerts. Consider pausing the broken Zap until it is fixed.
- **Duplicate alerts:** The same error may trigger multiple alerts if the Zap retries. Use Zapier's task replay feature rather than re-running failed tasks manually.

### Maintenance
- Review the #automation-alerts channel daily for the first week, then as alerts arrive
- Set up Slack notification preferences so the channel alerts you on every new message
- Create a simple tracking system (even a pinned message) for recurring errors
- Review and resolve all errors within 24 hours to maintain automation reliability
- Archive resolved error threads to keep the channel clean
