Margin versus markup: the difference that costs you money

GST and the 10% trap when you calculate margin

Because both figures included GST, the calculator strips the 10% from each before working out margin, giving $1,000 revenue and $500 cost ex-GST. The $500 gross profit is a 50% margin on the selling price but a 100% markup on cost, a clear illustration of why the two numbers must never be confused.
